What happens to your gearbox
It’s rarely possible to gauge much information regarding the internal condition of a gearbox from inspecting the external casing and operating the selector other than the absence of or presence of major faults, so the purchase of a ‘condition unknown’ gearbox is fraught with the danger it being an unsatisfactory unit.
We can undertake a full or partial strip down of a gearbox and provide a written report together with a detailed cost estimate for rebuilding and an evaluation and valuation of the parts for insurance or other purposes.
We aim to rebuild your gearbox to as close to original VW factory tolerances as possible and to that end we replace all the consumable wear items, i.e. bearings, seals and bushes. We also replace single use parts such as circlip as per the factory rebuild procedure and replace the synchro rings when worn. All bearing preloads and backlash are measured meticulously, and the box set up accordingly.
We supply a full written report and invoice detailing my findings, what work was carried out and a full itemised list of all parts replaced is supplied along with the warranty. All the parts that have been replaced are also returned to the customer.
Rebuild & Modernisation parts
As well as obtaining new parts direct from VW we also source genuine oem parts from other sources. Some seals and a couple of bearings we use are not the genuine article they have been chosen as offering equal quality with better value for money. Their fitment does not compromise the overall strength of the box.
We offer the VW South African specification Oiling Plates upgrade for both longevity, and to help cope with extra power and torque of more modern engines that people are fitting. We offer alternative final drive ratios or gear ratios to suit alternative engine installations where necessary and can provide guidance on gearing and tyre sizing.
We also have a robust steel plate gasket upgrade to resolve the mainshaft bearing displacement issue that affects this type of gearbox, and have the case machined to suit this, and also have most of the cases machined and sleeved for the relay lever shaft as after 30 years and many hundreds of thousands of gear changes we find that most case now have wear.
We also offer the Gripper limited slip differential, UK made with lifetime warranty as an option and may be able (depending on availability of parts) to offer a locking differential option both to Syncro owners who don’t already have this factory option, either for the rear or front transaxle, and also to 2 wheel drive owners who want to get a little further off the beaten track.
